Nikki Oughton is a photographer originally hailing from Brisbane who currently lives in the beautiful Northern Rivers area. Nikki has been passionate about capturing images that move her since she was 15 years old, when she was gifted her first SLR camera. This passion led her to complete a Bachelor degree in Photography from Queensland College of Art (Griffith University). After graduation she gained experience teaching photography in both private settings as well as at TAFE.
Nikki’s fascination with the human condition is reflected in her portrait and live performance work and resulted in her winning the Reserve Bank Portrait Prize. This same fascination inspired her to pursue a degree in Psychology and go on to become a counselling psychologist. Since this time Nikki has made space for both her passions and continues to be driven by her love of both.
As well as the human condition Nikki is greatly inspired by the natural world, both the spaces it inhabits as well as the flora and fauna that exist within it. Nikki’s current work seeks to explore the relationship between humans and nature and most recently the impact that the human species has on the natural world around it. Nikki was a finalist in Australian Photographer of the Year 2020 with her body of work ‘Rising from the flames’, documenting the impact of the 2020 bushfires on Australia’s East Cost National Parks and Forests,
