Over the recent long weekend my family and I embarked on a road trip with some dear friends down to Port Macquarie, NSW. Port Macquarie is located approximately half way between Brisbane and Sydney at the mouth of the Hastings river. Without a doubt the highlight of this bustling town is its breathtaking and dramatic coastline, which we spent an enjoyable time exploring, from Flynns beach to the Tacking Point Lighthouse which was built in 1879 and is Austalias third oldest lighthouse. Another highlight of the trip was a visit to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital which was established in 1973 to treat and rehabilitate sick and injured Koalas. Every day at 3pm they run free guided tours around the property which are informative and very worthwhile. The guide we spoke to reported that between 200 and 250 Koalas are admitted to the hospital each year, mostly as a result of disease as well as injuries sustained from dog attacks and car accidents. The Koalas are cared for by staff who, except for one clinical role, are made up of passionate volunteers and who do an amazing job. We got to watch staff hand feeding the Koalas who needed assistance and heard about the individual stories of a number of the Koalas in their care. I would highly recommend a visit to this special place if you ever travel to Port Macquarie. Below is some pictures of a few of the sweet characters we met. Here is a map showing the location of this beautiful sea side town.
