I took a trip with my brother through early morning misty mountains to the beautiful Lamington National Park and could not believe the number of gorgeous exotic rainforest birds we managed to see, including the previously elusive Regents Bowerbird. Another exciting find was the discovery of a bower belonging to the Satin Bowerbird. The bower is built and decorated by the male to attract a mate. It is made of twigs and sticks which are weaved into walls (like a tunnel) and around the structure the male Satin Bowerbird will place a collection of blue objects, both natural and man-made, as you can see below (to see a larger picture please click on the image). What I found most striking about the Satin Bowerbirds was the colour of their eyes - the most beautiful violet - particularly in the female! One of the friendliest birds we encountered was the lovely Australian King Parrot. Below are images of the male (mainly red with green on the wings) and the female (mostly green with a red belly) both of whom were very inquisitive (especially about our muesli bar!) and gentle. Below are some more feathered friends we encountered on the same day. To find out the bird's name just hover over the image or click to see the larger view. As you can see there was an abundance of birds! I would highly recommend a trip up to Lamington in the Springtime. For directions you can find a google map below the bird gallery.
